  {"id":9930,"date":"2012-10-18T14:08:18","date_gmt":"2012-10-18T19:08:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bemidjistate.edu\/bsutoday\/?p=9930"},"modified":"2021-11-01T15:18:38","modified_gmt":"2021-11-01T20:18:38","slug":"lecture-honors-haworth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bemidjistate.edu\/news\/2012\/10\/18\/lecture-honors-haworth\/","title":{"rendered":"Janice Haworth delivers Oct. 30 Honors Council Lecture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dr. Janice Haworth, associate professor of music at Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ, will deliver an Honors Council Lecture on her project of creating a musical notation system for traditional rhythms and using the system to compare and study the rhythms within four regions of Guinea.<\/p>\n<p>Haworth&rsquo;s presentation, &ldquo;Implementation of a Circular, Spatial Notation to Compare the Traditional Rhythms of Guinea,&rdquo; will be held at 7 p.m. Oct. 30 in the Bangsberg Fine Arts Complex&rsquo;s Thompson Recital Hall on the Bemidji State campus. Honors Council Lectures are open to the public free of charge.<\/p>\n<p>The lecture will include photos and stories detailing her experiences in Guinea and opportunities for audience members to read and play Guinean rhythms.<\/p>\n<p>Haworth spent two years as a Fulbright Scholar in Guinea, West Africa. Her first Fulbright project was to create a notation system allowing traditional rhythms to be notated in a musical way. Her second project was to take that notation system and use it to study and compare the rhythms of the four geographical regions of Guinea.<\/p>\n<p>The Honors Council Lecture Series is hosted by the Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ Honors Council. The council is the advisory group to the honors program comprised of 12 faculty members from each of the University&rsquo;s colleges.
