Dr. Mark Christensen, professor of English at Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ, will deliver the university’s first Honors Council Lecture of the fall semester on Sept. 12.<\/p>\n
Christensen’s presentation, “Broken Welds: A Prose Poem Study of Human Separation,” will be held at 7 p.m. in the Thompson Recital Hall in Bemidji State’s Bangsberg Fine Arts Complex. Honors Council Lectures are open to the public free of charge.<\/p>\n
The lecture will feature a reading from a new collection of prose poems which examine many kinds of loss and separation. Though unusual in form, Christensen the collection resembles a memoir.<\/p>\n
“It reaches for resolution and even redemption while confronting those losses,” he said.<\/p>\n
Christensen teaches creative writing, rhetoric and pedagogy at Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ. His first collection of poems, “Faith in Ice Time,” was a finalist in the poetry category of the 1998 Minnesota Book Award competition. Christensen, who is an active singer and actor, gives readings in a variety of venues, including public radio.<\/p>\n
The Honors Council Lecture Series is hosted by the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Honors Council. The council is the advisory group to the honors program comprised of 12 faculty members from each of the University’s colleges. Student representatives also are elected to the council by their cohorts for one-year terms.<\/p>\n
