  {"id":2226,"date":"2009-05-05T15:18:28","date_gmt":"2009-05-05T21:18:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bemidjistate.edu\/bsutoday\/?p=2226"},"modified":"2021-11-01T15:44:06","modified_gmt":"2021-11-01T20:44:06","slug":"20090513-cri-bbl-mathews","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bemidjistate.edu\/news\/2009\/05\/05\/20090513-cri-bbl-mathews\/","title":{"rendered":"May 13 Brown Bag Luncheon to discuss common employment law situations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>BEMIDJI, Minn.<\/strong> &mdash; Brian Mathews will summarize the most common employment laws a manager or supervisor will encounter in Minnesota during a noon Brown Bag Lunch program Wednesday, May 13, at the Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ Center for Research and Innovation.<\/p>\n<p>Attendees are encouraged to bring a bag lunch for the one-hour session, which is open free to the public at the center&rsquo;s off-campus facility at 3801 Bemidji Ave. North.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;In this presentation, I will describe realistic employee situations or questions and how a supervisor or manager should respond,&rdquo; said Mathews, who is an independent human resource consultant in the Bemidji area. &ldquo;Not filled with legalese or legal theory, this will be an ideal overview for every supervisor and manager who oversees other employees.&rdquo;<br>\nThe program will address such topics as allowed breaks and their length; post-termination paychecks; the handling of harassment complaints; the Family and Medical Leave Act; computation of overtime pay rates; what constitutes unlawful discrimination; and other frequently encountered subjects in employment law.<\/p>\n<p>Presentation materials will include a printed handout and a list of available Internet resources for further study.<\/p>\n<p>As a consultant, Mathews offers human resource assistance to small- and medium-sized businesses with a focus on developing practical solutions that fit the size and scope of the business. His background includes serving as a human resource manager with small and large organizations, including Fortune 500 companies, in Minnesota and the upper Midwest. <\/p>\n<p>A graduate of the University of North Dakota with a bachelor&rsquo;s degree in public administration, Mathews has been working in his current capacity for the past six months.<\/p>\n<p>The Brown Bag program is part of free training and informational presentations offered by the CRI each month.
