{"id":10545,"date":"2013-01-18T14:29:44","date_gmt":"2013-01-18T20:29:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bemidjistate.edu\/bsutoday\/?p=10545"},"modified":"2021-11-01T15:16:27","modified_gmt":"2021-11-01T20:16:27","slug":"lecture-honors-murphy-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bemidjistate.edu\/news\/2013\/01\/18\/lecture-honors-murphy-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Tom Murphy to deliver Jan. 24 Honors Council lecture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dr. John (Tom) Murphy, an associate professor of history at Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ, will deliver an Honors Council Lecture on Jan. 24 at 7 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>The lecture, entitled &ldquo;&rsquo;Gd active bus men, energetic &amp; of gd habs&rsquo;: Measuring the Worth of Sutlers &amp; Post Traders in the American West, 1840-1880,&rdquo; will discuss his study on sutlers and post traders, who were civilian merchants appointed to army regiments or at western military ports.<\/p>\n<p>The lecture will take place in Hagg Sauer, room 112, on the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ campus. Honors Council Lectures are open to the public free of charge.<\/p>\n<p>Tom Murphy is a professor of history in his twelfth year at Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ. He received his doctorate from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and served as an assistant editor on four volumes of the &ldquo;Papers of Ulysses S. Grant.&rdquo; Before coming to Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ, he taught at Temple College in Temple, Texas.<\/p>\n<p>He teaches courses in 19th and 20th century United States history, and this lecture reflects his interest in the relationship between the federal government and individual citizens in developing the American West.<\/p>\n<p>The Honors Council Lecture Series is hosted by the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Honors Council. The council is the advisory group to the honors program comprised of 12 faculty members from each of the University&rsquo;s colleges.
