  {"id":1188,"date":"2015-06-12T10:00:45","date_gmt":"2015-06-12T15:00:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bemidjistate.edu\/100\/?p=1188"},"modified":"2018-07-02T11:42:57","modified_gmt":"2018-07-02T16:42:57","slug":"bill-blackwell-jr-named-director-of-american-indian-resource-center","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bemidjistate.edu\/100\/2015\/06\/12\/bill-blackwell-jr-named-director-of-american-indian-resource-center\/","title":{"rendered":"Bill Blackwell, Jr., Named Director of American Indian Resource Center"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><b><i><\/i><\/b>Bill Blackwell, Jr., has been named director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bemidjistate.edu\/airc\/\">American Indian Resource Center<\/a> at Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ and Northwest Technical College.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">&bull; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bemidjistate.edu\/news\/2015\/06\/10\/photo-bill-blackwell-jr\/\">print-quality photo of Blackwell<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">Blackwell, a Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ alumnus and member of the Grand Portage Band of a Lake Superior Chippewa, will join the Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ and NTC campus communities after spending the last three years at Leech <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lltc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Lake Tribal College<i title=\"External link\" class=\"bsu-icon bsu-icon-external-link small ms-1\"><\/i><\/a>. Since 2014, Blackwell has served as the college&rsquo;s director of institutional advancement. In that role, he directed the institution&rsquo;s private and public fundraising activities, which included capital campaigns, planned giving, major gifts and annual gift programs. Blackwell also managed the college&rsquo;s grant writing and reporting efforts and its marketing and public relations activities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">Before overseeing the college&rsquo;s advancement efforts, he was an admissions and outreach coordinator. He implemented outreach activities and helped Leech Lake Tribal College to an 11-percent increase in student retention. He also managed a project to revamp the college&rsquo;s marketing and electronic communication materials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">He spent several years in retail management before moving into college administration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">&ldquo;I went back to school to make an impact on communities &mdash; especially native communities,&rdquo; Blackwell said. &ldquo;Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ provides an opportunity to engage with those communities on a wider scope, and it&rsquo;s a school with a history that&rsquo;s so rich. The opportunity to do the work I want to do at a school with Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ&rsquo;s established reputation is very appealing.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">Blackwell succeeds Dr. Anton Treuer as the center&rsquo;s director. Treuer, who had held the post since November of 2012, announced this spring that he would leave the position and return to Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ&rsquo;s faculty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">&ldquo;I&rsquo;m extremely honored and humbled to be given this opportunity,&rdquo; Blackwell said. &ldquo;I was a student at Ä¢¹½ÊÓÆµ and was in classes with Dr. Treuer, and Dr. Don Day, who had the job before Dr. Treuer, is my boss at Leech Lake Tribal College.
